After much anticipation, OpenAI has announced that the company is testing a dedicated ChatGPT app for Windows following the success of its Mac app.
The feature is only available to paid users as of now, which includes ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users. An early version of the app is available for download on the Microsoft Store.
Similar to the Mac version, the Windows app allows users to make queries to the chatbot in a dedicated window that you can use alongside your apps. You can even minimize it to a small “companion” window. Plus, you can use a handy Alt + Space shortcut to open the app quickly.
The ChatGPT web app also provides access to a preview of OpenAI’s o1 model, which is capable of “reasoning,” and allows you to upload documents and images to ChatGPT. With the app, you can ask AI questions about documents or the source of an image. You can also use the Windows app to generate images using OpenAI’s DALL-E3 image generator.
“With the official ChatGPT desktop app, you can chat about files and photos,” writes OpenAI. “This app brings you the newest model improvements from OpenAI, including access to OpenAI o1-preview, our newest and smartest model,” says OpenAI.
However, there are several restrictions on the new Windows ChatGPT application in its preview edition. Voice commands, including the newly introduced Advanced Voice Mode, are not supported at the moment. Additionally, there are still some issues with the app’s compatibility with OpenAI’s GPT Store.
OpenAI has shared that it will release the Windows app for ChatGPT with the “full experience” before the end of 2024. The date of the app’s release for ChatGPT free users is unknown.
