Developers now have greater control over what replies the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots choose to select due to new features that OpenAI unveiled for its File Search system. The application programming interface (API) for ChatGPT has been improved, enabling developers to personalize the behavior of the chatbot in addition to monitoring and adjusting its response retrieval method. Developers can thus make sure that only the right responses are chosen in this way. Notably, previous reports stated that the company intends to release a second AI model called “Strawberry,” which is supposed to enhance ChatGPT’s arithmetic and logical reasoning.

The AI company revealed the API updates in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Essentially, the upgrade enhances File Search controls within the Assistant API, enabling developers to review the responses chosen by the chatbot and make additional adjustments according to their needs. APIs differ from the ChatGPT web and app interfaces designed for consumers. While OpenAI fine-tunes the user-facing interfaces to operate in a specific manner, developers who build internal tools for businesses or integrate the chatbot into diverse applications and software need greater flexibility. They require the ability to customize and adjust the chatbot’s behavior to better suit their specific needs.

This difference arises because the public version of ChatGPT is designed for general use, while the API version is tailored for specific tasks. To perform optimally in these specialized functions, it’s crucial for the AI to avoid errors and deliver responses of the highest quality.

Previously, developers couldn’t fine-tune the API to ensure the chatbot produced relevant responses for specific use cases. However, with the new control options, this capability is now available. OpenAI has detailed how these changes will function on its support page. Developers can now review the File Search responses within the Assistant API. Previously, the File Search tool selected answers it deemed relevant for a given query. With the new update, developers can now examine the responses chosen by the AI and evaluate the information generated in previous runs. This capability is expected to offer deeper insights into how the tool operates.

Additionally, developers can now modify the settings of the result ranker used to retrieve information for generating responses.  By selecting a ranking between 0.0 and 1.0, they can control which information the AI prioritizes and which it disregards.
