Panasonic and Leica have launched a new collaboration named L2 (L squared), in which they will collaboratively develop cameras, lenses, and image technologies. Both firms are already members of the L-Mount mirrorless alliance (together with Sigma and Leitz), and Panasonic has loaned Leica camera technology. The new partnership, however, goes beyond that, as they will integrate “jointly developed technologies” in their respective lens and camera products, with the L2 label appearing in future marketing initiatives.

“Through this collaboration, the two companies will jointly invest in new technologies that can be incorporated into camera and lens products, and will incorporate jointly developed technologies into each other’s Leica and Lumix products to further enhance their product capabilities,” according to the press release. “Going forward, Leica and Lumix will utilize L² Technology, which will open up new possibilities for creative camera users, in their marketing activities in order to develop a collaborative system over the long term.”

According to a credible source, Panasonic’s relationship will extend not just to full-frame L-Mount cameras, but also to Micro Four Thirds versions. Hopefully, this indicates that Leica-branded lenses with fully compatible image stabilization and AF will be available across camera lineups.

There’s no hint on when this partnership will yield results. It does make sense, though, because Panasonic, despite making excellent cameras, is often eclipsed by Canon, Sony, and Nikon. Likewise, Leica has a stellar reputation for lens quality, but their mirrorless cameras are often ridiculed since they are primarily rebadged, pricey Panasonic units. Panasonic may earn some respect from Leica’s renowned reputation and lens quality by partnering, while Leica will have access to Panasonic’s technical prowess.
