Positive Grid‘s Spark amp is useful for practicing musicians, but its size and weight make it impractical for jamming in your bedroom or venturing outside of your studio. Fortunately, the firm now offers a portable alternative. Positive has launched the Spark Mini amp, which offers the digital capabilities of its bigger sister in a considerably smaller (about six inches across) form that you can take with you wherever you go. The 10W gadget also functions as a Bluetooth speaker and is said to offer “punchy” bass via a downward-facing boost — there’s even a swappable grille to customize the design.

The interconnected features continue to be the focal point. The Spark mobile app can automatically generate backing tracks as you play, show chords for any song (even slowdowns if you want to study a portion), and offer any of the 10,000-plus free guitar tones. The Spark Mini comes with 33 amp models, 43 effects, and a USB interface (in addition to the almost obligatory quarter-inch guitar input and eighth-inch aux inputs) to let you adapt your performances to creative applications. The battery has an eight-hour runtime. Positive hasn’t released price information for the Spark Mini, but it will be available for pre-order in March. It’s fair to assume that the minuscule amp will be less expensive than its $299 full-size sibling, perhaps making it a superior buy if affordability and adaptability are more important than sheer power.
