Reddit is “revamping” its block feature to make it more similar to other social sites. Blocking a user on Reddit now not only hides that person’s posts from your view but also prevents them from seeing or interacting with your posts.
That may seem apparent, but blocking on Reddit was previously more akin to a “mute” function in that it only operated in one direction. Since blocking did nothing to prevent the user from interacting with your posts, it was particularly ineffective for people coping with harassment or other types of abuse.
When someone who has been blocked comes across a blocked user’s posts or comments, the content will look as if it has been removed. After a person is blocked, their profiles become unreachable as well. (moderators, on the other hand, will be able to see posts from users who blocked them if they appear in the subreddit they moderate.)
To better safeguard against harassment, Reddit is modifying how blocked users’ material appears for individuals who triggered the block. Those who have blocked someone else can still access their posts, but the content will be collapsed by default. According to Reddit, these posts will remain accessible so that users may continue to use the site’s reporting mechanisms and track any possible abuse.
