According to sources, Rolls-Royce’s All-Electric Plane – “Spirit of Innovation” has reached a peak speed of 387.4 MPH just two months after its first flight, tentatively breaking the speed record for electric airplanes. It also claimed a high speed of 345.4 MPH across a 3 kilometer (1.86 mile) track and the fastest time to a height of 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) (202 seconds). The records have yet to be validated, but if the 345.5 MPH speed holds, it would be an amazing 132 MPH faster than the existing record of 213 MPH, set by a Siemens-powered Extra 330LE.
It is submitting the trials to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the authority in charge of global aviation records, to get the records certified. If validated, the speeds would be rather astounding given that the plane only flew for the first time in September, implying that with more experience, it may travel considerably faster. The Spirit of Innovation is an old-school “tail-dragger” airplane (steering from the back) with the canopy pulled all the way back that appears as fast as it travels. It is propelled by a 750-volt, 400-kW (535-HP) engine. With 6,480 cells, Rolls-Royce claims to be using the ” most power-dense propulsion battery pack ever assembled in aerospace.”
