Both Samsung and Adata are teasing PCIe 5.0 SSDs ahead of the major CES exhibition in January. This next generation of solid state storage is twice as fast as the fastest PCIe 4.0 drives, with read/write rates of up to 14/12 GBps.

Adata showed off two prototypes of its first PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSDs with capacities ranging from 4TB to 8TB. The Project Nighthawk SSD is built with a Silicon Motion SM2508 controller capable of 14/12GBps sequential read/write rates, while the Project Blackbird SSD is built with an InnoGrit IG5666 controller capable of 14/10GBps read/write speeds. Unless COVID derails it again, Adata will presumably disclose further specifics during CES, which begins on January 5th.

Meanwhile, Samsung has just introduced the PM1743 PCIe NVMe SSD, which is equipped with Samsung’s 6th generation v-NAND and a custom controller that supports the PCIe 5.0 interface. The company is aiming for enterprise customers with the promise of increased power efficiency of 30% and enhanced security measures.

According to Samsung, the PM1743 has sequential read rates of up to 13GBps (random read speed of 2,500K IOPS) and sequential write speeds of 6.6GBps (random write speed of 250K IOPS). The PM1743 SSD, which will be available in sizes ranging from 1.92TB to 15.36TB, is now being sampled by chipset and server makers ahead of mass production in Q1 2022.
