Skydio, a US drone manufacturer, has gone from modest beginnings to a genuine DJI rival in a matter of years. In 2019, the company took a major stride forward with the Skydio 2, launching a UAV with one of the strongest obstacle avoidance technologies seen up to that time. With CES 2022 in full swing, it’s back with an upgraded variant of that drone dubbed the Skydio 2 Plus, which includes both hardware and software upgrades.
In comparison to the Skydio 2, the new model has two more antennae, allowing you to fly it up to 6 kilometers out in any direction. Its predecessor, on the other hand, had a range of 3.5 kilometers. Furthermore, Skydio says that the new model’s battery life has been improved, extending its flight duration by 20%. In addition, the company has improved its Beacon remote to increase its range to 3 kilometers.
Skydio also announced KeyFrame, an AI-powered feature that the company claims would allow “anyone” to “design impossible camera motion that is smooth, precise, and repeatable.” As the name implies, you choose a few keyframes for the drone to take, and the program subsequently ties them together in a single continuous motion. Skydio hasn’t had the most extensive or comprehensive collection of camera modes in comparison to DJI, thus the addition of KeyFrame is significant for the company.
The Skydio 2 Plus is now available for purchase, with prices beginning at $1099, and both Skydio 2 and Skydio 2 Plus drones will sport the KeyFrame feature.
