Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the rights to A Winter’s Journey, an animated film that will be created in part with the PlayStation game-creation tool Dreams. According to a reliable media source, the film will feature real actors as well as CG and hand-painted animation and will be based on Franz Schubert’s Winterreise, a collection of 24 songs for voice and piano. It relates the story of a lovelorn poet who sets out on a perilous trek across mountains and snow in 1812 Bavaria.
Dreams were initially developed for the PlayStation 4 by Media Molecule, the team behind LittleBigPlanet. From the beginning, the studio presented it as a tool to make “art, movies and video games” and was previously defined as “an engine, learning suite and distribution platform rolled into one.” People have used technology since then to make their own games, accurate renderings of nature, and immersive experiences of their favorite movies, among other things. A Winter’s Journey, on the other hand, is said to be the first time Dreams has been employed in a major film. The film’s release date has yet to be announced, but production is set to begin in June in Wrocaw, Poland, with stars including John Malkovich and Jason Isaacs. It will most likely take some time before it is ready for release. Dreams is now available for $10 in the US PlayStation Store, and it contains a rotating list of the most imaginative games created using it.
