According to rumors, Spotify Discover, a new tool that allows users to navigate through a feed of vertical videos and skip or like them, similar to how you can on TikTok is being tested. In the most recent version of Spotify’s beta iOS TestFlight release, it appeared as the fourth icon in Spotify’s iOS toolbar.
Discover appears to be a means for users to discover new music quickly and easily by swiping up and down across the feed. You may like the music by tapping on a heart, or you can bring up Spotify’s standard information card about the song by hitting the three-dot menu.
According to rumors, the format may employ Spotify’s Canvas format. This allows artists to produce videos to accompany their music rather than simply static images, and when you play a video, it replaces the traditional album art for specific tracks. They can take the shape of normal video, mixed media, as well as 2D and 3D graphics. Spotify reminds artists that Canvas increases key engagement metrics such as sharing, adding to playlists, and visiting profile pages when marketing the tool.
Spotify acknowledged to a source that it is testing the function but declined to reveal any specifics, such as how it will curate feeds. “At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience,” a spokesperson said. “Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have any further news to share at this time.”
Spotify is far from the first platform to flatter TikTok through imitation. Instagram’s Reels and YouTube Shorts are virtual clones of TikTok, while Netflix recently added Fast Laughs, a TikTok-like comedy feed. It’s unclear whether Spotify’s Discovery feature will be released from beta, but it appears to be a helpful method to discover new music.
