NASA has finally launched the James Webb Space Telescope. After 14 years of development and a series of delays, the telescope launched from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana aboard an Arianespace Ariane 5 rocket on Christmas morning.

The JSWT will orbit the Sun, near the Earth-Sun system’s second Lagrange point. It will take about a month for the spacecraft to get to its destination, where researchers will be able to peer inside black holes, study some of the universe’s earliest galaxies, and assess the habitability of numerous exoplanets.

To develop the project, NASA collaborated with European and Canadian space organizations. Throughout its lengthy creation, the JSWT has been plagued with delays. NASA had wanted to launch it in 2007, but rising costs forced engineers to reconsider in 2005. The JSWT was later deemed ready in 2016, however, the project was put on hold once more due to construction challenges. The telescope was crafted in 2019, but then the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, causing testing and shipping delays.

NASA established a December 18th launch date for the JWST when it arrived at the spaceport. However, owing to last-minute inspections and a lack of good weather, the launch was pushed back till its actual launch date. Still, it was worth it for such a vital, long-planned mission. The JWST has now arrived in space, and we will begin to learn about some of its discoveries in the coming months.
