Apple Digital IDs – the feature that would allow you to save your ID in the company’s Wallet app will have a delayed release. According to an update to the official iOS 15 website, the functionality will now be available in early 2022. Previously, the company expected to begin in late 2021.

The functionality was initially introduced by Apple at WWDC 2021. The company stated at the time that the tool would allow you to link your driver’s license or state ID card to Apple Wallet in the same way you would a credit or debit card. Select Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints at some US airports will be among the first to offer the feature.

You’ll be able to submit your ID to the TSA using your iPhone or Apple Watch at specified locations. You will do so by tapping your device on an identification reader, and you will not be required to hand over your iPhone or Apple Watch to a TSA official.

Apple stated in September that the functionality will be available in eight states at launch, beginning with Arizona and Georgia and progressing through Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah. Apple stated that support would be added for merchants and venues in the future, in addition to TSA checkpoints.

Apple has not specified a release date for the feature other than early 2022. What is certain is that it will not be available with iOS 15.2. This update is presently under beta testing and does not enable the storage of digital IDs.
