Former US President Donald Trump recently announced that he is going to launch his own social media platform. According to a press release by the Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), the platform will be named TRUTH Social and is set to launch a beta version in November. The beta version will be initially available to invited guests only. The national rollout is expected to happen in the first quarter of 2022.
According to the news release, the beta launch of the platform is the first of the three stages in the company’s plans, which will be followed by a subscription video-on-demand service called TMTG+ that will feature news, entertainment and podcasts. In a slide deck on its website, the company reveals its plans to eventually compete against Amazon’s AWS cloud service and Google Cloud.
Earlier this year, Trump was banned or suspended from major social media firms including Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube for violating their policies following the Jan 6 attack on the Capitol. Consequently, Trump had revealed his aspirations to build a rival social media platform.
Trump has said in a statement, “I created TRUTH Social and TMTG to stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech. We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American President has been silenced”. According to him, the company’s mission is to create ‘a rival to the liberal media consortium and fight back against the Big Tech companies.’
“I am excited to send out my first TRUTH on TRUTH Social very soon. TMTG was founded with a mission to give a voice to all. I’m excited to soon begin sharing my thoughts on TRUTH Social and to fight back against Big Tech”, he added.
As per the statement, the TRUTH Social app will be created through a new company that is formed by a merger of the Trump Media and Technology Group and the Digital World Acquisition Corp, listed on the Nasdaq.
