Twitter has blocked new accounts from getting a Twitter Blue subscription. As per the latest update on Twitter’s official help page, the accounts created on or after November 9, 2022, cannot subscribe to the $8 per month service ‘at this time’. The social network giant has not yet mentioned when it will lift this ban. The platform also didn’t mention why it is restricting new accounts from accessing the Twitter Blue tier.
Interestingly, the move comes just days after Elon Musk introduced the $8 month subscription service for the Twitter Blue Tier, which comes with a shiny ‘verified’ checkmark that is indistinguishable from the ones that Twitter used to hand out selectively to high-profile accounts.
This block comes in light of what happened immediately after the subscription policy was announced. It was abused. Numerous fake accounts pretending to be celebrities, brands, and other influential people immediately came up and made false claims. Some instances include a fake Connor McDavid saying he already had been traded from the Oilers to the Islanders, a fake LeBron requesting a trade away from the Lakers, a fake Nintendo account posting an image of Mario flipping the bird, and more.Twitter has been on an experimenting spree ever since Elon Musk’s takeover, and this new block is the latest addition to the list. While blocking new accounts is just a temporary solution, it is yet not clear how the company will prevent this possibility of misuse in the longer term.
