Yes, Twitter has confirmed that it is working on an edit button that will allow users to modify tweets after they have been posted. This announcement comes on the heels of Elon Musk initiating a Twitter poll on whether the users wanted this feature. However, Twitter has specifically mentioned that its announcement has nothing to do with the poll.
It is a feature that Twitter users have been requesting for a long time now. In fact, it has even become a long-running meme on the platform. “Tweets, but editable” had become the standard response to the discovery of a typo in a popular tweet. At present, the company plans to start testing the feature with Twitter Blue subscribers in “the coming months”. Under the edit button, users will be able to fix typos or errors in a tweet, without losing any retweets, replies, or likes that it has already gained.
Twitter’s VP of consumer product, Jay Sullivan said that “editing has been the most requested Twitter feature for many years”, and that the company has been looking into building the feature in a safe manner for the past year. “Without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, Edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation. Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority when we approach this work”, he added.
Although it has been a long-standing request, Twitter’s former CEO, Jack Dorsey, was reluctant to add the feature to the platform. He had expressed concern that an edit button would enable users to change a tweet’s complete meaning after it is widely shared. However, looks like Twitter’s new CEO, Parag Agrawal is open to the idea.
At present, Twitter’s rival social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram already allow their users to edit and modify their posts, without affecting the engagement it has already achieved.
