After a long wait, your WhatsApp chat history can now be end-to-end encrypted on both Android and iOS. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed this, stating that the company intends to gradually roll out the feature to provide a consistent and dependable user experience to everyone.

However, once you have access to this feature, you will be able to encrypt your backups before they are sent to iCloud or Google Drive. Neither WhatsApp nor your cloud service provider will be able to access the data at that moment. It’s also worth noting that if you ever lose the 64-digit encryption key that safeguards your chat logs, you won’t be able to restore your backups. You can also protect your backups using a password so that you can retrieve them if you ever lose them.

Even though WhatsApp has enabled users to securely talk to each other, it just recently began testing encrypted backups. The firm announced that it has accomplished the final step toward offering a comprehensive end-to-end encrypted messaging experience.

It’s important to note that end-to-end encryption does not provide complete privacy protection. According to a published report, Facebook was considering developing an AI that could evaluate encrypted data without needing to decrypt it to deliver advertising based on that information. The head of WhatsApp dismissed the claim, but it serves as a reminder that privacy is more than just the presence of end-to-end encryption.
