WhatsApp Introduces Screen Sharing And Landscape Mode Features For Video Calls

WhatsApp is again here with another new feature for its users. The Meta-owned social media platform has rolled out a feature called Screen Sharing which allows users to share a live view of their screen during a video call. To initiate this feature, users have to click on the ‘share’ icon and choose between sharing a specific application or sharing the entire screen. Users can also now also enjoy video calls in Landscape mode thereby offering a more wider view.  Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this feature through his Facebook and Instagram profiles. This new feature puts Meta one step ahead when compared to traditional video-conferencing platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Skype.

Meta is rolling out the feature in a phased manner. They have already started rolling out the features on iOS, Android, and Windows devices. It will gradually become available to all users worldwide. The screen-sharing feature was tested in beta for almost a couple of months before giving it to users across the globe. Zuckerberg has shared an image showing the interface of the new features. The interface of the new WhatsApp screen-sharing feature looks like that of Google Meet or Zoom. The video call participants will appear in small rectangular tiles on the right part of the screen.

The screen share feature works only once a video call has been started. Previewing documents,  files, web pages, videos, photos, and other things is possible while using this feature. The new Landscape mode was introduced for better integration of the screen share feature. Users can capture screenshots during an ongoing screen share. We can’t share OTT content (DRM-protected) with others via the screen share feature. Screen share does not allow sharing of audio data.
