Today, we are witnessing AI being used on a large scale to generate things like images, videos and music. This fascinating piece of technology is however not all sunshine and rainbows. It can be used to scrape original content and copy the likeness and even the voices of real people, which opens up a plethora of privacy concerns. The good news is that companies like YouTube are coming up with ways to protect the identity and privacy of their artists and creators.

YouTube is working on new tools to give creators more control over generative AI content that uses their voice or likeness. According to the company, trial programs for new technology that can identify AI-generated material using a person’s face or singing voice will begin next year.

Upcoming face-detection technology is supposed to enable users across a range of industries to “detect and manage” information that features an AI-generated copy of their face. According to YouTube, it is developing the resources necessary for artists, musicians, actors, and sports to track down videos in which a deepfake of their likeness appears and decide what action to take. The company has not announced a release date for this tool.

The company is also releasing a  “synthetic-singing identification technology” tool using which artists and creators will be able to automatically recognize and manage YouTube videos that mimic their singing voices using generative AI. YouTube explains that the tool is integrated into its current Content ID copyright identification system and that it will be tested as part of a pilot program next year.

“As AI evolves, we believe it should enhance human creativity, not replace it,” Vice President of Creator Products at YouTube, Amjad Hanif, stated in the company’s blog post. “We’re committed to working with our partners to ensure future advancements amplify their voices, and we’ll continue to develop guardrails to address concerns and achieve our common goals.”
