Zoom held its annual Zoomtopia event recently, where it unveiled a bunch of new AI features including Zoom AI Companion 2.0 for Zoom Workplace, and a custom AI avatar feature.
Users can use the AI Companion to generate text, summarize materials, and more. AI Companion is a tool meant to support staff members in taking notes, composing emails, identifying key points in messages, and creating post-call summaries. Additionally, it is capable of generating messages, event descriptions, and speaker biographies.
In Zoom calls, the AI assistant can perform online searches even on topics that are unrelated to the meeting. This means that attendees can ask the AI questions regarding general topics and current events during their call. The companion can also answer queries concerning the topic covered in the meeting once it has ended. Additionally, users can now access all interactions with the AI even after the meeting has ended.
“The next generation of AI Companion will help simplify users’ workdays by sorting through the noise and prioritizing what’s most important with high-quality results,” reads the company’s newsroom post.
Another feature that was unveiled at the event was the custom avatars for Zoom Clips. It allows users to record a video clip, which is then processed to create an avatar, or a digital clone using an AI model. You must record a short video introduction of yourself for Zoom’s AI to use to create a digital avatar that looks and even sounds like you. You can then write the message you want to be sent by your AI avatar and have it speak for you.
However, the functionality does raise concerns regarding deepfakes. Zoom Chief Product Officer Smita Hashim confirmed at a press briefing that the company is “handling it really carefully with advanced authentication, with watermarking technology, and strict usage policies.”
This custom avatar feature will only be available in 2025 as part of Zoom’s custom companion add-on, which will run you an additional $12 a month.
